Poker Paradise: How North America Is Still In Pole Position For Poker

07.12.2023

People play poker all over the world. It is, not to put too fine a point on it, a worldwide phenomenon. From the storied, spectacular Las Vegas strip to the new markets in places including Macau, gambling is a pastime that is loved by many millions. Visit any casino and you will see how poker takes center stage. Where there are high rollers, there is poker: it’s the biggest draw in the casino game gambling world. These days, of course, online poker and online casinos in general are taking this idea to a whole new level and, perhaps importantly, to a whole new audience.

Playing poker is no longer the preserve of those who can attend casinos in person: as online play becomes ever more accessible, you can play when you want and from where you want. Though there are casinos around the globe, and many online gaming options coming out of a plethora of countries, there still seems to be one leader. Whether it’s a global online poker tournament based out of the USA or playing online slots for real money in Canada, North America continues to lead the way in terms of being a poker paradise and the epicenter of global online casino gameplay.

So what is it about North America that keeps it at the forefront of poker, online gambling, and online gaming in general? Perhaps it is the fact that the original and still most visited casino and poker-playing destination in the world is Las Vegas. Perhaps it is the fact that this is the continent from which the World Series of Poker came. Maybe it is a blend of many such things. One thing we can take a look at, however, is how and why this has come about, and where things may go, with the world of online poker set to become an ever-bigger player, if you’ll pardon that pun.

Casino Cathedrals That Continue To Attract Poker-Playing Devotees

As I alluded to in my opening gambit above, Las Vegas is the global epicenter of the gambling world. I am not sure that this famous strip of land in the Nevada desert will ever be displaced from this pinnacle of poker positioning, even with more and more competitors entering the race to attract players and casino lovers to their locations. It is a competitive market, especially with the simultaneous competition that online poker and online casinos create, but some things never change.

If you do something as simple as a Google search for the most visited casino cities in the world, you will see Las Vegas on top of the tree. Indeed, take a look at the pure number of dedicated poker-playing locations across the USA and you will see just how far a reach this game has. Even so, it is the casino cathedrals of Las Vegas that continue to lead the way. This is true in terms of visitor numbers, the ability to host major poker tournaments, and the general attraction that never seems to dull, any more than the neon lights that decorate the strip itself.

There is, put simply, something about the city that continues to attract devotees of both poker and other casino games. When it comes to poker, I am sure if you did a thoroughly unscientific poll asking people what the most famous poker destination in the world is, Las Vegas would be almost exclusively their first answer, such is its place in the pantheon of poker-playing history.

Casinos Diversifying To Embrace And Harness Online Poker-Playing Power

Even in the hallowed halls of Las Vegas and Atlantic City casinos, there is no denying the fact that poker has now become a game played online by millions. As much as it is still revered in terms of in-person play, casinos are now embracing and harnessing the popularity that has been turbo-charged by the world of online poker. It would be foolish not to, at least from a business and growth perspective.

As you may already know, some online poker-playing sites and apps are independent, while others are extensions of existing brick-and-mortar casinos, bringing the thrill of the casino floor to people around the world and around the clock. When it comes to online casino gaming growth, poker is one of the main drivers. To put it another way, the popularity of poker due to online gaming opportunities has grown in both hard and fast numbers, but also in terms of the demographic consumer base. With accessibility comes growth and in terms of online poker companies, North America has also been at the forefront of this powerful trend.

So, returning to our initial questions, what does the future of the poker-playing paradise of North America look like? Well, I have no crystal ball, but I would place a few chips on the fact that it remains propitious. I stand by my conviction that Las Vegas will never be unseated or dethroned as the king of poker-playing royalty, nor will it ever dwindle in terms of visitor number. On this basis alone, I don’t see anyone wrestling the position from North America when it comes to being the ultimate poker paradise.
